Roadsalt
chloride penetration
into concrete reaches
the reinforcing
rebar and causes it
to rust and the
concrete to spall or
crack and flake off

Where the interstate passes over Kentucky Street more corrosion is evident
In the Sherman Minton bridge inspection reports available on the INDORT website, roadsalt damage to the bridge deck is described:
The underside of the upper level deck is showing signs of
deterioration, with areas having many transverse cracks with salt leaching out. Areas of the underside of the deck
have the "wet look", which indicates that the lower section of the deck (below the bottom mat of reinforcing) is saturated with chlorides and could begin to spall off and fall
down onto the EBL traffic lanes.
The same roadsalt damage is visible on the spaghetti junction decks. Still, we coat the bridges with tons of roadsalt so that taxpayers can pay millions to rebuild bridges.
Roadsalt is employment insurance for Kentucky contracting companies.
